Dusty Creek Ranch is located conveniently in West Texas centered between I-20 and I-10 before they merge into one; I-20. This area is well known as the Permian Basin, home to more than 10,000 square miles of oil and gas deposits. A shallow sea, known as the Permian Sea, which was densely populated with life, once covered the Permian Basin. As the ocean dried up, the decaying plants and animals eventually helped form the gigantic pools of oil and gas that are still being taken from the basin. Much of the Basin was home to the Comanche Indians prior to 1875. We occasionally find the treasured arrowhead and obvious campfire sites occupied by the Indians. Grasslands were very inviting to the ranchers and farmers and since surface water was almost nonexistent, water wells were drilled to sustain themselves and their livestock. Evidence of oil and gas were commonly found during drilling in the early 1920’s. This discovery greatly expanded the prospects for the Permian Basin’s becoming a major oil and gas production area.

That’s why we’re here. Our livelihood has been dependent on the production of oil and gas. It has also given us the opportunity to diversify our lifestyle; hence alpacas. The unsurpassed beauty of West Texas sunsets and a climate that is warm and inviting make this our oasis in the desert. West Texans are known for their hospitality with deep appreciation of a colorful past and enthusiasm for a future rich with possibilities; cowboys, culture, oil and everything in between.

For the love of the alpaca, we are dedicated to selective breeding in order to improve our animals. It is our obligation as breeders. Each generation keeps getting better!
